Perhaps it's just a cruel joke on the world at large, or maybe it's the fact
that people might not be as wary because it's April Fool's Day, but this April
1st, the Conficker C virus is programmed to unleash itself across the Internet,
trying to cause as much damage as it can. Your best bet is to make sure you're
not infected before April 1st. After April Fool's Day, there's no telling what
the next chapter in the Conficker virus saga will bring. If it's anything like
the other chapters, though, it's not going to be pretty.
Internet security professionals are concerned enough that they're spreading
word far and wide that people who aren't sure if they're infected or not should
stop everything and check immediately. While the Conficker C virus is designed
to use a host computer to do damage, there's no telling what changes might be
made to the code after the April 1, 2009 deadline passes.
Conservative numbers suggest there may be anywhere from 5 million to as many
as 16 million computers infected with Conficker C. While this is good news for
the virus writers (hackers of the most evil variety), for the rest of us, it's
terrible news. The best defense against a worm like Conficker C is a good
offense. With that in mind, be sure to check all your computers with the latest
anti-virus definition files. If you really want to help, make sure everyone you
knows does the same thing.
